Circular extension springs designed to maintain constant, reliable radial pressure on the seal lip

OSN offers a range of springs for oil seals—also known as garter springs—designed to maintain controlled and uniform radial pressure of the sealing lip against the shaft. Their helical geometry and closed-ring joint help compensate for lip wear, variations in elastomer volume or stiffness, shaft misalignment, and changes in temperature, pressure and service time. In this way, they help preserve sealing contact and reduce the risk of leakage or the ingress of water, dust, dirt, lubricants and other contaminants.

Available materials

The standard range can be manufactured in steel and in AISI 302, AISI 304 and AISI 316 stainless steels. AISI 302 is a common spring material due to its good elasticity and mechanical strength; AISI 304 provides general corrosion resistance suitable for numerous industrial environments; and AISI 316 is recommended when greater protection is required against corrosive environments, moisture, salts or certain chemicals.

Other alloys, surface treatments and finishes are also available on request, depending on temperature, operating medium, corrosion, fatigue and the required service life.

These springs are mainly used in oil seals, although they may also be used in small belt drives, electrical connectors and other assemblies requiring stable radial force. Selection must be based on the actual installation and operating conditions of the sealing system.
